Dreams vs. Delusions
Dreams vs. Delusions
Every time someone finds out I trade for a living, the same questions come:
“Why are you messing with this?”
“Just get a real job, man.”
“You think you’ll get rich trading? Keep dreaming!”
I’ve heard it all — from the basketball court to the trading room. And they’re not wrong: 99.9% of people get slaughtered in the markets.
Is working like an ox until 60 really “realistic”?
Are you not allowed to have dreams anymore?
Stephen Chow’s classic line is still my motto:
If a person has no dreams, what’s the difference between him and a salted fish?
People without dreams are exactly like the salted fish in the freezer aisle: cold, salty, motionless, waiting to be gutted by fate.
From the Basketball Court to the Trading Floor
My old dream was to become a pro basketball player. In high school I wanted to be Sakuragi Hanamichi, shouting “I’m a genius!” every day. I trained under the blazing sun until I was charcoal black, woke up at 6 AM on weekends to drill until noon.
People laughed then too:
“Why train so hard?”
“You think you’ll make the national team?”
“Stop daydreaming!”
Five years after graduation, I never made the national team. My level is still street-ball at best. But I have zero regrets. Those days of giving everything for a dream forged a man who will never bow to difficulty.
I brought that same fire into trading.
Dreams get you in the door
Only execution, discipline, review, and relentless grinding keep you alive and moving forward.
At first I was exactly like everyone else:
“I’ll 10x my account overnight!”
“Six figures a month, easy!”
“I’m the next trading prodigy!”
I thought feeling, luck, and a few lucky calls would let me coast. Then the market punched me in the face until I was looking for my teeth on the floor.
That’s when I finally understood: a dream without system, discipline, and daily review is just delusion.
But when you break the dream into daily execution checklists, treat every loss as tuition, and carve every rule into your bones — that’s no longer delusion. That’s light about to become reality.
