Donchian Channel, developed by Richard Donchian, is a technical indicator consisting of N-period highest high, lowest low, and middle line. Donchian Channel is one of the simplest channel indicators, widely used in trend-following strategies, particularly in the Turtle Trading Rules.
Upper Band = Highest high over N periods Lower Band = Lowest low over N periods Middle Line = (Upper Band + Lower Band) / 2 Standard period: N = 20 Turtle Trading Rules use: Entry: 20-period channel Exit: 10-period channel
Standard Donchian Channel (20 periods): Most commonly used
Short-term Donchian Channel (10 periods): More sensitive, suitable for short-term trading
Long-term Donchian Channel (50-55 periods): More stable, suitable for long-term trend following
Dual Channel System: Uses different period channels for entry and exit
Price Breaks Above Upper Band: Makes N-period new high, strong buy signal
Price Breaks Below Lower Band: Makes N-period new low, strong sell signal
Price Within Channel: Consolidation state, awaiting breakout
Channel Narrowing: Decreasing volatility, may signal breakout
Channel Widening: Increasing volatility, trend developing
Middle Line Support/Resistance: Middle line acts as dynamic support or resistance
False Breakout: Price breaks channel then quickly retreats, may be false signal
Donchian Channel is classic trend-following tool, widely used in Turtle Trading Rules. Buy when price breaks above 20-period channel upper band, sell when breaks below lower band. Use 10-period channel for exit signals: close long when price breaks below 10-period lower band, close short when breaks above upper band. Donchian Channel excels in strong trending markets but generates many false signals in ranging markets. Many traders combine Donchian Channel with ATR, adjusting position size during high volatility periods.
Simple and intuitive, clear breakout signals, suitable for trend following, battle-tested (Turtle Trading Rules), no lag (based on actual highs/lows)
Generates many false signals in ranging markets, may miss early trend, may experience large drawdowns after breakout, requires strict risk management
