Market Profile, developed by Peter Steidlmayer and CBOT, is analytical tool showing price distribution across time periods, forming bell curve. Market Profile helps traders understand market structure, identify value areas, and market balance/imbalance states.
TPO (Time Price Opportunity) = Distribution at specific price for each time period VA (Value Area) = Price range containing 70% of TPOs VAH (Value Area High) = Upper boundary of value area VAL (Value Area Low) = Lower boundary of value area POC (Point of Control) = Price level with most TPOs IB (Initial Balance) = Price range during first hour of trading
Daily Market Profile: Analyzes price distribution for single trading day
Composite Market Profile: Analyzes cumulative price distribution across multiple days
Market Profile Patterns: P-shape, b-shape, trend day, etc.
Market Profile Indicators: VA, POC, IB, and other key levels
Price Within VA: Balanced state, range trading
Price Breaks VA: Imbalanced state, trend may form
IB Breakout: Breaking opening range, important trend signal
POC: Most important support/resistance
VAH and VAL: Value area boundaries, important reference points
Single Print: Low volume area, price easily returns
Trend Day: Price continuously runs outside VA
Market Profile is widely used tool by professional traders, especially futures traders. Value Area (VA) represents fair price range accepted by market; price tends to fluctuate within VA. When price breaks VA, indicates market imbalance and possible trend formation. POC is most important price level, typically acting as strong support/resistance. IB (first hour range) breakout is important intraday trading signal. Many traders use previous day's Market Profile as reference for current day trading, particularly VA and POC levels.
Shows market structure, identifies value areas, understands market balance/imbalance, provides objective support/resistance, widely used by professional traders
