Ichimoku Cloud is a comprehensive technical indicator developed by Japanese journalist Goichi Hosoda. "Ichimoku" means "one glance," indicating traders can see market trend, momentum, and support/resistance at a glance. The indicator consists of five lines and a cloud, providing comprehensive market analysis.
Conversion Line (Tenkan-sen) = (9-period high + 9-period low) / 2 Base Line (Kijun-sen) = (26-period high + 26-period low) / 2 Leading Span A (Senkou Span A) = (Conversion Line + Base Line) / 2, shifted forward 26 periods Leading Span B (Senkou Span B) = (52-period high + 52-period low) / 2, shifted forward 26 periods Lagging Span (Chikou Span) = Current close, shifted backward 26 periods Cloud (Kumo) = Area between Leading Span A and Leading Span B
Standard Ichimoku (9, 26, 52): Original parameters, suitable for daily charts
Adjusted Ichimoku: Parameters adjusted for different markets and timeframes
Cloud Thickness: Thicker cloud indicates stronger support/resistance
Cloud Color: Green cloud (Leading Span A above) indicates bullish, red cloud (Leading Span B above) indicates bearish
Price Position: Price above cloud is bullish, below is bearish, inside is neutral
Conversion-Base Line Cross: Conversion line crossing above base line is buy signal (TK cross), below is sell signal
Cloud Breakout: Price breaking through cloud is strong trend signal
Cloud Twist: Leading Span A and B crossing signals possible trend change
Lagging Span Confirmation: Lagging span breaking through price confirms trend
Multiple Confirmation: Price above cloud, conversion line above base line, lagging span above price - triple bullish confirmation
Ichimoku works best in trending markets, fewer signals in ranging markets. Strong signals require multiple component confirmation: price breaking cloud, TK cross, lagging span confirmation. Cloud acts as dynamic support/resistance; thicker cloud means stronger support/resistance. Future cloud (shifted forward 26 periods) can predict future support/resistance. Many traders only trade when price is clearly on one side of cloud, avoiding trading inside cloud.
Provides comprehensive market analysis, trend direction at a glance, provides dynamic support/resistance, can predict future support/resistance, multiple confirmations reduce false signals
Fewer signals in ranging markets, steep learning curve, complex chart, significant lag, parameter adjustment significantly affects results
